The Jerónimos Monastery (Mosteiro dos Jeronimos in Portuguese) dates back to the early 16th century and is a testimony to the golden age of Portuguese explorers. The magnificent building, just like the Belem Tower, located right next to it, are masterly examples of the Manueline style (from the time of King Manuel I). Its cloister and the royal necropolis it houses are worth a visit.

The Belém Tower built on the banks of the Tagus is also a must. From its 35 meters, you will have a magnificent view of the Belém district and the river.

 

Take higher grounds at the Castelo de Sao Jorge

 

The beautiful Castle of Saint George (Castelo de Sao Jorge in Portuguese) overlooks the city of fado. Built in the mid-11th century, the Islamic fortress dates from the most difficult part of the hilltop to take advantage of the steep sides to the north and west.

Visit the castle gardens and have a coffee break to enjoy some pasteis de nata (small egg pies) and drink a can of sumol (Portuguese pineapple soda).
