The most famous island of the Greek Cyclades is of unparalleled beauty. Although very touristy, Santorini retains all its charm and offers beautiful moments of bliss. Check out the 5 things you should do when visiting in Santorini.

Hike your way through the island
If shuttles and buses allow you to easily visit the volcanic island and go from one city to another (be careful not to miss your last bus), there is no better way to discover the island. than to do it on foot. Many (very doable) hiking trails run the island and offer many sites off the beaten path such as small churches, nature walks or beautiful views. Be careful, however, not to rely too much on your Google Maps because it may make you walk on the roadside (not the most fun !).

Explore Fira

The capital of Santorini is the point of arrival and the low budget choice for tourists. Its central position makes it easy to explore the North and South of the island. Do not miss the view of its caldera, this steep cliff covered with beautiful white houses. If you do not have dizziness or/and heart problems, try the descent to the old port and its 600 steep and slippery steps! A descent / climb in donkey is possible but remains unethical. A cable car also exists. Cruises are possible and allows you to sail around the island.
As Fira is less touristy than the north of the island or at least less prestigious, it is a good place to do your shopping (do not leave without a volcanic soap). The archaeological museum gives a very good explanation of the history of the island.

Visit Imerovigli and Oia
Northern Santorini is popular with tourists and luxury shops. Oia is one of the most jet-set destinations in Santorini and many tourists come there to observe its majestic caldera.
Unfortunately Oia suffers from its international aura and if it remains an unmissable destination, the smallest town of Imerovigli, less known to the general public, is an even more magical place. Its caldera is just as pretty and if you can meet the occasional honeymooners take a picture, it is rare to meet more than 2-3 people at the same time as its streets are so narrow. Imerovigli is the perfect spot for a romantic getaway if you have been able to save a bit to book one of its charming hotels with infinity pools overlooking the Aegean Sea.

Visit Akrotiri
Located at the southern tip of the island, Akrotiri is a remarkable archaeological site. This prehistoric off the ground site gives us a wonderful insight in the Aegean way of life. Do not forget to explore the small fishing village and savour a deliciously prepared fresh fish.

If you decide to hike to Akrotiri, you can take this opportunity to visit a winery (and leave with a bottle of vinsanto) and also go through the charming village of Megalochori.

Have a drink and dine at sunset in Santorini
Santorini remains a place of unparalleled relaxation. You can bask on one of its beautiful beaches, especially the red beach (not very easy to access), the white beach or Vlychada. And then after a day of stroll, give yourself a moment of pure bliss by booking a table in one of the restaurants or bars to observe the sunset over one of the calderas of the island (Fira, Oia or Imerovigli). Find out the exact time when the sun goes down and be on site at least 1 hour in advance (or 2 hours during the tourist season). Sip on a cocktail of ouzo or mastiha, and munch on some fresh vine leaves or calamari and get ready for the show!
